Background
DB Schenker is global logistics business, offering world-class transport and logistics services. Schenker Ireland has facilities in Dublin, Shannon and Cork and it employs 170 permanent staff.
Warehouse Operator Wayne Morgan recognised that there were significant inefficiencies in the way in which pallets were received and recorded at the facility. This involved a manual process whereby the staff had to physically go to the docking area, collect the packing slips off the pallets, return to their work station, input the data, print a label, walk back to the pallet and apply the label.
“From an R.O.I. perspective, we’re saving 3 hours a day per employee – that’s the equivalent of hiring 1.5 people.” – Wayne Morgan, Warehouse Operator DB Schenker
The business made an initial enquiry to c and they were very satisfied with the quick response and the speed at which the new system was implemented. Preliminary work included:
- A Site Survey
- A Product Demo
- A Quotation
- Onsite Staff Training
The comprehensive end-to-end solution recommended for DB Schenker was four Mobile Workstations which included hardware, software and professional training.
Mobile Workstation Efficiencies
This portable printing solution enables the staff to bring the labelling facilities to the pallets, scan the items on the spot and generate the labels instantly. The station then integrates this information seamlessly and instantly into the company’s existing systems. Wayne feels that the new system has significantly improved the work-flow.
“It is easier to work this way, it’s real-time and there’s less human error – it has boosted our efficiency, even with the increased activity on the dock; it’s the best piece of technology we have got!” – Wayne Morgan, Warehouse Operator DB Schenker
Wayne also feels that the new system has had a positive impact on staff morale as it’s easier to work with, there’s a lot less walking need and the team are happy to use the Workstation.
However the economic benefits have also been significant…
Significant R.O.I. Benefits
The company has analysed the financial impact of the new system and it has been able to establish that based on the time saved alone, the business is saving three hours a day per employee and with four mobile work stations, this comes to the equivalent of 60 hours a week or 1.5 employees. And this efficiency benefit will become even more significant as the number of pallets to be handled is set to increase and night shifts are to be introduced.
Customer Service Focus
Because we work extensively with logistics and manufacturing customers, we appreciate the importance of up-time and value for money in a competitive marketplace. However we are also well-aware that the technology solutions we deliver need to be backed up by a responsive, professional, expert service. DB Schenker was delighted with the service we delivered…
“We have received a second-to-none service from Peak Technologies and we look forward to an ever-strengthening relationship in the future.” – Wayne Morgan, Warehouse Operator DB Schenker
